Position Title:                 Corpsmember – only 6 openings available

Position Type:                 Full-time, temporary, 9 week program

Location:                        Work throughout southern Front Range of Colorado and Gulf Coast in Mississippi

Compensation:               $210/ week first 5 weeks increases to $250/week second half of season. Includes transportation to projects, uniform shirts education and training, camping equipment, safety equipment, and food.

For two months this autumn, the Colorado Legends and Legacies Youth Corps (CLLYC) is offering young men and women (aged 17-24) a unique service corps experience involving natural resources conservation and disaster recovery projects.  Corpsmembers will serve in a team-oriented, labor-intensive work environment developing both personally and professionally. The CLLYC program is designed to offer transferable employment skills and exposure to conservation and environmental, parks and recreation careers. Corpsmembers will also have the opportunity to enhance their leadership, group living, and life skills as well as learn to become stewards of natural resources.

           

Program Overview:

For the first half of the season, the crew will complete conservation projects on public lands throughout a region that includes Custer, El Paso, Fremont, Huerfano, Las Animas, Pueblo, and Teller counties. Project examples include fencing, wildfire fuel reduction, campground improvement, trail construction and improvement, park improvements and development.

For the second half of the season, the crew will travel to Mississippi and work on disaster recovery and environmental cleanup projects resulting from Hurricane Katrina.   

 

Crews consist of 6-8 Corpsmembers supervised by 2 adult Crew Leaders. The program involves camping out for 10 days at a time while in their home region (Colorado) and being housed in air conditioned community buildings while working in the Gulf Coast.  The crew is also responsible for planning and cooking meals and completing team-based chores.  

 

As with all CLLYC programs, this unique opportunity will include environmental education, life skills and employment skills components. For this unique season, the program will also include training in emergency preparedness, disaster recovery, hazardous materials handling, community emergency resource teams, risk management, and weatherization techniques.

 

In addition to wages, individuals completing the 10-week program will earn a $1,000 AmeriCorps Education Award that can be used at any accredited university, college, trade or vocational school.

 

Corpsmember Qualifications:

w     Must be between the ages of 17-24 and eligible to earn an Americorps education award.

w          Must commit to complete the program and participate fully in work projects and education.

w          Must be eligible for employment in the United States.

w          Must be willing to uphold the images of both the Colorado Legends and Legacies Youth Corps and the AmeriCorps Program.

w     Must be physically fit, willing to work hard, participate as part of a team, and be dedicated

        to the Colorado Legends and Legacies Youth Corps’ philosophy.

w          Must adhere to the CLLYC policy which prohibits use of tobacco (smoking or chewing), the use of alcohol and illegal drugs, and the use of cellphones while serving as an employee.

 

 

Essential Functions:

This is physically demanding work! While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit and talk or listen. The employee is required to use hands to operate tools or controls, and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to focus. The employee must be able to understand and communicate safety instructions as well as basic workplace instructions in English.
